Developer Insights: Introducing Dynamic Weather Gameplay and Battle Parties

Trainers,

We’re just as excited as you are for the introduction of even more Pokémon originally from the Hoenn region to start appearing in the real world. Alongside the introduction of these new Pokémon, we also revealed that a new dynamic weather gameplay system will start rolling out to Trainers around the world. We wanted to share a few notes detailing some of these upcoming changes, as well as a few comments from our development team.

Dynamic Weather Gameplay:

  • The Pokémon GO user interface will reflect each Trainer’s current local weather.
  • Certain Pokémon will be more likely to appear frequently in weather that suits them the most.
    • These Pokémon will yield bonus Stardust when caught.
    • These Pokémon are more likely to have greater potential in battle.
  • Move types that match certain weather conditions will deal extra damage in battle.

Developer Comments: When we first started thinking about features we’d be introducing alongside the Pokémon originally discovered in the Hoenn region, a dynamic weather system that reflects real-world weather in-game was one of the first concepts that came to mind. This feature brings us one step closer to how we’ve envisioned discovering Pokémon in the real world–further connecting the digital world to the physical world you experience around you.

We want changes in weather to have an impact on your gameplay experience. When it’s raining outside, the game world will match the real-world conditions. You’ll see rain falling from the sky and Water-type Pokémon appearing much more frequently, but that’s not all. While it’s raining, the Water-type Pokémon you catch in the wild or through Raid Battles will award more Stardust and have greater potential in battle. You’ll also be able to use your local weather patterns to your advantage in Gym battles and Raid Battles, as some move types will be more effective during certain weather conditions. We’re incredibly excited for you to experience this new dynamic weather gameplay system as it starts rolling out to Trainers around the world.

We also want to share two other changes coming to Pokémon GO alongside this update.

Battle Parties (Beta):

  • Trainers will be able to create and name teams of up to six Pokémon in their Pokémon collection for quick access when participating in Gym battles and Raid Battles.

Developer Comments: We’re thrilled to announce that we’re also rolling out the first iteration of battle parties. Battle parties are preset teams of up to six Pokémon that you are able to create and customize to fit your needs. Whether you want to create different parties for frequent Raid Battles, or have battle parties that take advantage of certain weather bonuses, this feature will make it easier than ever to quickly choose which Pokémon you bring to battle. During this beta phase, battle parties will be saved to your device, so you’ll need to reset your battle parties if you get a new device or use multiple devices to play Pokémon GO. Once the feature is fully launched, your battle parties will carry over to each device you log in with.

Pokémon Storage:

  • Trainers will be able to increase the maximum number of Pokémon they can collect in their Pokémon Storage from 1,000 to 1,500 by purchasing Pokémon Storage Upgrades in the in-game shop.

Developer Comments: We’ve heard your feedback loud and clear. With the addition of Pokémon originally discovered in the Hoenn region, the need for more Pokémon Storage is greater than ever. You’ll now be able to store up to 1,500 Pokémon. We’ve also increased the minimum Pokémon Storage size by 50, so all Trainers will soon be able to carry 50 additional Pokémon.

Introducing Weather and 50 Pokémon from the Hoenn Region in Pokémon GO!

Trainers,

Starting later this week, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, and several more Pokémon originally discovered in the Hoenn region in the Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire video games will start appearing in Pokémon GO for the first time ever—with even more to be discovered over the next several weeks! We’ll also be introducing a new dynamic weather system in Pokémon GO that will change the way you and the millions of Trainers around the world discover, catch, and interact with Pokémon.

You’ll want to start paying even closer attention to your local weather patterns, Trainers. In addition to the in-game map being updated with cool new weather visuals, weather near you will impact Pokémon in a variety of ways. For example, you’ll find your odds of discovering Mudkip splashing around will greatly improve on rainy days, as certain Pokémon types will be more commonly found during various weather conditions. Additionally, attacks of certain types will be more effective during some weather conditions, so a Charizard’s Fire Spin will perform better on sunny days, for example. Rain or shine, winter or spring, your gameplay experience will remain fresh, making your time outdoors even more exciting.

There’s never been a better time to grab your umbrella or snow boots and safely venture outside with family and friends this season. As you explore your local neighborhoods, remember to share a photo of your encounters on social media with the hashtag #PokemonGO. We’d love to see all of your new adventures as they unfold.

Pokémon GO Travel Global Catch Challenge Complete!

Trainers,

What a week! Over the past seven days, our Pokémon GO Travel hosts, iHasCupquakeCoisa De Nerd, and Rachel Quirico, took us on all kinds of adventures across Japan. We’ve been to Tokyo Tower for a Tyranitar Raid Battle, to the foot of Mt. Fuji to catch a Lapras, to the streets of Kyoto for a Stardust challenge, and finally to the dunes of Tottori to play alongside thousands of other Trainers during the Pokémon GO Safari Zone event.

Meanwhile, millions of Trainers from more than 140 countries participated in the Pokémon GO Travel Global Catch Challenge, where they came together to collectively catch over 3.36 billion Pokémon in under seven days. After this incredible milestone was reached, Farfetch’d began showing up worldwide, Kangaskhan was spotted in East Asia, and Ho-Oh started appearing in Raid Battles for the very first time. Now it’s your turn to get in on the action. Grab your friends and battle Ho-Oh in Legendary Raid Battles at Gyms near you before it disappears on December 12, 2017!

While the Pokémon GO Travel Global Catch Challenge was taking place, the Tottori Prefecture hosted a Pokémon GO Safari Zone event in the Tottori Sand Dunes from November 24 to 26. At the event, 89,000 Trainers came to the Tottori Sand Dunes to catch over 12 million Pokémon, including the mysterious Pokémon Unown. We’re constantly amazed by the dedication of our Trainers and are honored to have so many join us in person at events around the globe!

This Pokémon GO Travel event may have come to an end, but your adventure is just beginning. On a trip? Venturing to a new part of town? Share your adventures with us on your preferred social media channels by using #PokemonGO, and look out for ways to get involved in future Pokémon GO events taking place around the world.

Developer Insights: An Update on Raid Battles

Pokémon GO

Trainers,

We greatly appreciate all the feedback you’ve shared with us about the Raid Battle feature over the past few months. We’ve been carefully reviewing your feedback and will be making a few changes to the feature in response. These improvements will not require you to update your app, but they will impact your gameplay. Below are a few notes detailing the changes as well as a few comments from our development team:

EX Raid Battle changes

EX Raid Battles will take place most commonly at Gyms found in parks and sponsored locations.

Trainers with a high-level Gym Badge are more likely to be invited to EX Raid Battles taking place at that Gym.

Trainers who have completed a larger number of Raid Battles are more likely to be invited to EX Raid Battles.

EX Raid Battle start times now take into account popular Raid Battle times at that Gym.

Trainers invited to EX Raid Battles will receive an in-game notification if the EX Raid Battle is canceled.

Trainers will receive Stardust and Premium Raid Passes when an EX Raid Battle is canceled.

Developer Comments: Over the course of the EX Raid Battle field test, much of the feedback we received was focused around how Trainers are chosen to participate in EX Raid Battles. When the feature first entered field-testing, the system randomly selected a set of Trainers who were eligible for the EX Raid Battle. By taking Gym Badge level and total Raid Battles completed into account, we’re able to give Trainers who actively engage with the Gym where the EX Raid Battle is taking place and those who have invested more time into the Raid Battle feature a better chance of being invited to participate.

We also wanted to address some feedback we received about the timing and locations of EX Raid Battles. First, we’re taking popular Raid Battle times at the Gyms where the EX Raid Battle is taking place into account to help ensure many of the people who are invited will be able to participate. The reason we decided to have EX Raid Battles primarily take place at Gyms located in parks and at sponsored locations is to ensure the locations are easily accessible to Trainers in the area. Over time, we’ll explore hosting EX Raid Battles at more locations, but we want to first make sure those locations are also easily accessible.

We think each of these changes will have a positive impact on Trainers around the world. With the implementation of these features, we’ll be removing the field-test label and considering this the official launch of the EX Raid Battle feature. While the EX Raid Battle field test is coming to a close, we’ll continue to monitor your feedback and look to make more improvements, as we do with all Pokémon GO features.

Raid Battle changes

Trainers will now receive Golden Razz Berries for completing Raid Battles.

The numbers of Potions and Revives awarded to Trainers for completing a Raid Battle will decrease slightly, but the quality of Potions will increase.

The likelihood of receiving Fast and Charged Technical Machines for completing a Tier 3 or higher Raid Battle has increased.

Trainers will now receive Stardust for participating in a Raid Battle, whether they win or lose.

Magikarp will make a triumphant return to Tier 1 Raid Battles.

Developer Comments: We want Trainers to walk away from Raid Battles feeling like they’ve earned some amazing rewards, even if the Raid Boss flees. To help make this more of a reality, we’ve made adjustments to the quality of items Trainers receive after defeating a Raid Boss. The addition of Stardust rewards for participating in a Raid Battle will help Trainers continue to power up the Pokémon they need to take on even more powerful Raid Bosses.
